Chapter 1-2: Types of Texts

You may be called upon to identify the type of text that you are reading or you may be asked to write a text that falls within a certain category. The basic types of texts are:

  • Expository (texts based on facts, as opposed to opinions)

    • Descriptive (describing objects in space)

    • Narrative (relating events in time)

    • Explanatory / Conceptual (explaining facts or concepts)

  • Argumentative / Persuasive (including both a continuous line of argumentation and counter-arguments)

  • Instructive (including instructions such as treaties that must be followed and optional instructions, such as recipes)

Maintaining this website requires alerts and feedback from the students that use it when they see a problem or have a suggestion.
